ISTH SSC announces 2024 grant award recipients
CHAPEL HILL, NC, USA, November 6, 2023 — The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) announces the recipients of the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) 2024 grant awards, an annual program that provides funding to support and advance the SSC’s state-of-the-art projects.
The ISTH SSC is a permanent committee of the ISTH with independent authority over its scientific program and reports to the ISTH Council. Through collaborations with related organizations, the SSC develops and recommends standards relevant to the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis. The SSC is comprised of 21 subcommittees in addition to one working group, one standing committee and the executive committee.
“We are proud to recognize the 2024 winners of the ISTH grant awards program. Our goal for the grant awards is to encourage and inspire advancement and innovation within the field of thrombosis and hemostasis,” said ISTH SSC Chair Joost Meijers.
The SSC grant awards are comprised of two categories: a large grant award ($50,000 USD) and small grant awards (not to exceed $20,000).
The large grant award is presented to the SSC Subcommittee on Perioperative and Critical Care for the project, “Understanding perioperative anticoagulation from the patient’s perspective,” led by principal investigator Alfonso J. Tafur.
In addition, the SSC small grant award winners for 2024 are as follows:
“Colchicine to quench the inflammatory response after deep vein thrombosis: The CONQUER-DVT pilot trial” (Principal investigator: Nicola Potere, SSC Subcommittee on Control of Anticoagulation)
“Validation of the individual fibrinolytic capacity as biomarker to guide treatment decisions in high-risk pulmonary embolism” (Principal investigator: Dominik Draxler; SSC Subcommittee on Fibrinolysis)
“Splanchnic venous thrombosis outcomes in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms” (SSC Subcommittee on Hemostasis and Malignancy; Principal investigator: Rushad Patell)
“Adults with APS (Sydney criteria) and arterial thromboembolism within the past 12 months” (SSC Subcommittee on Lupus Anticoagulant; Principal investigator: Sam Schulman)
“Biobanking Rare Platelet Antibodies” (SSC Subcommittee on Platelet Immunology; Principal investigator: Donald Arnold)
“ECFC standardization by transcriptional profiling” (SSC Subcommittee on Vascular Biology; Principal investigator: Ruben Bierings)
Additionally, two recipients will receive a grant award with partial funding of $15,000 USD:
“Fibrin clot structure and function in patients with congenital FXIII deficiency” (SSC Subcommittee on Factor XIII and Fibrinogen; Principal investigator: Munira Borhany)
“Racial disparities in the diagnostic management and outcomes of Pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism: A population-based observational study” (SSC Subcommittee on Women’s Heath; Principal investigator: Yan Xu)
Awardees may allocate their grant funds to pay for project needs such as laboratory assays, supplies, staffing support and/or vendor services.
