ISTH announces recipients of its inaugural 2024 Outstanding Mentor Awards

The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) is pleased to recognize Marc Carrier, M.D., and Alisa S. Wolberg, Ph.D., as the recipients of its inaugural Outstanding Mentor Awards.

The Outstanding Mentor Awards are a new award from the ISTH in 2024, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to cultivate and mentor early career professionals in the thrombosis and hemostasis field.

Created by the ISTH Lectures and Awards Committee, the award underscores the crucial role of mentorship in advancing scientific excellence and fostering professional growth within the global thrombosis and hemostasis community. The inaugural recipients are recognized for their mentorship of the next generation of professionals in the field, helping to make a significant and positive impact on their mentee’s careers and advance research and/or clinical practice.

The awards will be presented at the Opening Ceremony of the ISTH 2024 Congress in Bangkok, Thailand.

Learn more about the 2024 Outstanding Mentor Awards recipients:

• Marc Carrier, M.D., is Head of the Division of Hematology at The Ottawa Hospital, a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medicine and Senior Scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program of The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute in Canada. He holds a Tier 1 Research Chair in Venous Thromboembolism and Cancer from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. His clinical research is focused in venous thromboembolic disease and cancer, including cancer screening, prevention and management.

• Alisa S. Wolberg, Ph.D., is a Professor and Vice Chair of Basic Science Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States. Wolberg previously served as a Councilor of the ISTH (2016-2022), Chair of the 2018 Hemostasis Gordon Research Conference, Scientific Co-Chair of the 2020 ASH Annual Meeting, Associate Editor of RPTH, and Director of UNC’s Program in Translational Medicine and its associated NIH-funded T32 “Enhancement training for the next generation of translational Ph.D. scientists.” She currently Chairs the ASH Committee on Scientific Affairs and the NIH/Hemostasis, Thrombosis, Blood Cells, and Transfusion (HTBT) study section, and serves as an Associate Editor of Blood Advances. She is also Chair of the 2025 Hemostasis Thrombosis Research Society meeting, and Vice Chair and Chair of Basic Science of the 2024 and 2025 ISTH meetings, respectively.
