CHAPEL HILL, N.C., USA – June 28, 2019 – The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) announces the publication of the first-ever educational needs assessment for thrombosis and hemostasis researchers and physicians in the Society’s open-access journal, Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH). The ISTH initiated this comprehensive international study to identify gaps and develop priorities for the Society’s educational programs. AXxDEV Group conducted the study.

The mixed-methods study collected data from 24 countries to identify areas of educational need in diagnostics, treatment and research. Through more than 450 interviews, surveys and discussion groups, the study identified nine areas as overarching and globally applicable for priority educational focus.

In diagnostics, the following main themes were identified: 1) Thrombosis risk assessment; 2) Genetic testing; 3) Diagnosis of von Willebrand disease (VWD).  In treatment, the following overarching needs emerged: 1) Use of anticoagulants with certain patients; 2) Preventative treatments in bleeding disorders; 3) VWD treatment. In the research category, the overarching needs emerged: 1) Collaboration with/among researchers; 2) Collaboration between teams to collect data from human subjects; 3) Promotion of basic science research.

“This comprehensive study provides the ISTH, in fact the global field of thrombosis and hemostasis, with important findings that will allow the ISTH to better target its educational offerings to the needs of our community,” said Claire McLintock, ISTH President. “With this data, we can better meet the needs of the greater thrombosis and hemostasis community and provide resources that will improve upon the ISTH mission of advancing the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to thrombosis and hemostasis.”

In addition to the high-level findings published in RPTH, the full portfolio of data collected will help the ISTH further identify the educational opportunities in a much more granular way, such as tailoring activities in specific geographic regions, recognizing the level of expertise the learner has, type of education they need and practice setting. This comprehensive strategy is customizable and meets the ever-changing needs of professionals in the field regardless where they live, maximizing learning and ultimately improving the ability to support research, diagnosis and clinical care.

The educational needs assessment, along with the ISTH Core Curriculum, will enhance the educational strategy of the ISTH, creating a best-in-class program for professionals working in thrombosis, hemostasis and other related conditions. This will promote harmonization of training and competency in clinical and laboratory settings. The impact of the educational activities will also be measured utilizing surveys to best serve all professionals, thus strengthening the relevancy and success of programs around the world.

A task force has already begun work on a three-year roadmap to be launched in 2020, which will incorporate current Society offerings and launch new activities. “This is an exciting time for the ISTH as we grow our educational programming,” said Cary Clark, ISTH Director of Programs and Education. “The needs assessment was a great first step. We are now pleased to see this work develop into an action plan which will strengthen our core offerings and address the gaps identified by our community.”
