We are pleased to welcome you to the XXVII Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria, Australia, taking place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The city of Melbourne has been repeatedly named one the most livable cities in the world by The Economist’s livability rankings, which surveys more than 140 cities around the world. Melbourne boasts enormous cultural diversity with more than 100 languages spoken by its residents, and offers world-class educational institutions and affordable healthcare while spearheading scientific discovery on a global platform.

In addition to taking place in an exciting location, the ISTH 2019 Congress is happening during an eventful year for the Society. 2019 marks a milestone year for the ISTH as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. What started as a small group of 175 members interested in thrombosis and hemostasis in 1969 has now blossomed to more than 5,000 members from 102 countries. This year also marks the inaugural year of the new annual congress format in collaboration with the ISTH Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) offering a fully integrated, state-of-the-art congress that embodies the ISTH 2019 tagline: Research, Discovery, Outcomes.

While our understanding of the field has intensified, it has also extended into other areas of physiology that our predecessors could never have imagined. As such, the ISTH 2019 program will reflect these new developments across plenaries, abstracts, presentations, and much more.

We are proud to share that ISTH 2019 welcomes at least 5,000 delegates and more than 2,100 submitted abstracts. Delegates have the opportunity to participate in approximately 80 oral communication sessions, 84 state-of-the-art lectures, four plenary lectures—wherein the most up-to-date clinical and basic science will be presented by leaders in the field. Additionally, a late-breaking session will be held to highlight key groundbreaking results from clinical trials. We have also maintained the very popular masterclass sessions (11 parallel classes on three separate days) which will take place during the lunch timeslots.

Delegates can also enjoy six parallel SSC Sessions (Saturday-Tuesday) that will have no competing sessions, thereby allowing the SSC to maintain its unique presence. These SSC sessions will be thematically aligned with related oral communication and state-of-the-art lectures to reduce foot traffic.

We invite you to peruse the eye-catching artwork around the exhibition that signifies the major themes of the congress and helps delegates find their way around. This imagery derived from the ISTH 2019 logo that was designed by local indigenous artist, Mick Harding, whom you will learn more about during the opening ceremony.

Poster sessions will take place on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday afternoons, providing an opportunity for delegates to network and explore the latest research findings in the field. And don’t worry—the much-anticipated ISTH Networking Evening takes place on Tuesday evening to enjoy for those with tickets.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our industry partners for their generous support. We strongly encourage you to visit the exhibition hall, attend product theater and supported symposia, learn about the latest advances, and exchange ideas with representatives from the diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries.

I would like to personally wish you an informative and engaging experience down under at ISTH 2019. We hope you will be inspired by the science, news, and innovation taking place at the congress and within the culture of Melbourne.

Sincerely,

Robert Medcalf
ISTH 2019 Congress President
